Why
Yoga 4 Hope was inspired during Pigeon Pose. As a new Yogi relishing in her new found practice and the on-going passion to raise awareness, action & change in her local community, Yoga 4 Hope took shape and became a reality in August of 2008: “Honour Your Light Within For Breast Cancer” where $12,000.00 was raised for Windsor Regional Hospital’s: Breast Health Center.
In 2009, a long savasana was taken (reality happens!) and the event returned in 2010 “Reach For Higher Ground” where $14,000.00 was raised towards the purchase of Windsor-Essex County’s very own Breast Thermography machine.
In 2011, Yoga 4 Hope Raised $15,000.00 in an effort to offer 100 local women access to the program at no charge.
Yoga 4 Hope, along with Scare Away Breast Cancer (2010 & 2011) was responsible for the purchase of the Breast Thermography machine ($32,000.00 USD) and the Perfect Pair: Proactive Breast Health Program evolved and launched in November 2010 under the direction of Natasha Zajmalowski, ND
Yoga is such a healing practice that unites body, mind and spirit which is also what is needed in our community, a uniting of change agents. Yoga connects and unites us all onto our universal mat. What better way to raise funds for the community than through the healing practice of Yoga that is over 5000 years old.
The healing properties of yoga are myriad and wide-ranging, all founded in the way that yoga elevates breathing patterns, strengthening the body’s natural immune response and releasing negative stresses.
In regard to cancer, which is a broad complex of illnesses due to a weakened immune system that cannot cope with the proliferation of damaged cells, the practice of yoga can help strengthen the immune system and encourage our inner healing forces.
It works in several ways: BREATHING EXERCISES improves respiration, releases tension and restores calm and balance RELAXATION calming the nervous system while alleviating stress and anxiety which our immune response POSTURE increases energy levels, clears toxins, and enhances the functioning of our internal organ systems MEDITATION develops the detachment and clarity enabling us to accept the realities of our situation and to cope with fear.
The simplest of yoga breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques can also help us to deal with the overwhelming emotions that come with this life-changing diagnosis: shock, fear, and guilt to name a few. And they can be of help in managing stress, anxiety and pain post-surgically and following chemotherapy and radiation.
Yoga is a calming force in the midst of chaos which can often times be just what is needed to make clear, thoughtful decisions in regard to moving through a serious illness like cancer. (www.UrbanZen.org 2008 Well-being Conference)
